I’ve spent a good deal of time with the 821, and absolutely loved it. However there are other options, if I’m willing to spend more.
First is the 821 dark, which is a non-starter as it doesn’t come in red. Especially painful as the way it’s kitted out makes me think it would be the PERFECT bike for me
Next up is the base 1200. More power, adjustable suspension, single side swing arm, etc.
After that... 1200S, with Ohlins, and other stuff probably. Ohlins was enough to peak my interest.
I want to try a 1200S, but I also don’t want to like it if you catch my drift. Price difference is about $6k, which.... Now that I think about it is more than I’ve ever even spent on a car.
Talk me out of it oppo. Or give me bike reccomendations. There are a lot of dealers around here and I have a few days free

Those scare me lol. My only other bikes have been a 250 ninja and a G rom. Although I should probably try something sportier than a Monster at some point....

given my and recent friend experiance with ducatis and eruo bike ingeneral...
stay the fuck away from them if you want to actually ride.
Look at a GSX-S 750. Honda CB650R is also a contender. yamaha XSR 900 also good choice.

Kawasaki Z900 RS. All the retro standard good looks, but on a modern sportbike frame. All for way less than the monster 1200. ALso you can get the cafe version which looks like pure sex.

The logical choice would be to buy a lower spec bike. The high end stuff really only makes a difference for track duty and you don’t want to take a nice shiny new bike on track anyway.

Oh? What happened?
To be fair, the 821 I had for a few hours died on a test drive... It would be easier to stay away from Ducati if they didn’t make such enjoyable bikes that look so damn sexy.
XSR900 is what I’m most curious about. I’ll definitely try that this week. The other two... Same problem I ran into with an sv650. I’m sure they’re great bikes, but they’re kind of uninteresting to me.
KTM 390 Duke was another one I loved, but I want a bit more power

he has a 1200s.
this summer, past 3000km.
sprag clutch went
fuel pump died
throttle position sensor went. ducati only sells the throttle bodies with the sensor. $1500 parts.
he is less then pleased.

I looks like the green bits are just kind of stuck on top of the rest of it. Like a hat that is a little too small for the head on which it rests.

How hard would it be to make the dark bike red? Wrap the tank and the fenders? It would be less than the $6k you’re trying to talk yourself out of for a professional paint or wrap job. Get the bike that’s nearly ideal , spend less than $6k making it perfect, and you're done.

*Decay, the
wet blanket*
You really should get something slower to learn on for a while, even the 821 is pushing it into the “too fast” category. Most people who start out on fast stuff learn some bad habits that are quite hard to unlearn later in their riding career.

As far as I know, most are actually quite reliable since the current gen was released in 2014. They definitely get expensive when things go wrong out of warranty though.

I’ll say it again, street triple and XSR900. I know you mentioned the second, but still. If you ride a 1200 Monster you will buy it, just be aware of that. Whatever you do, do it by this weekend and come down on it for the meet.

Oh, and in my other post I forgot to make a recommendation.
Get a VFR800, it is the best daily driver spec motorcycle ever invented
. Great engine, reliable, comfortable, capable, and cheap.

“they arent that unreliable”
“has had his apart for 2 months not riding it”
correct, they reliably break :)

If all you’ve ridden is a Ninja 250 and a Grom, honestly just go up to the mid size capacity of bikes, forget the super nakeds like the Monster 1200. You’ll appreciate that super naked/superbike more and ride it with more confidence, once you owned and ridden a mid sized bike for a bit. Plus if your a big bike rider, then going down a class to ride anything smaller will feel slow in comparison.
Anything mid sized will be more than fast and quick to keep pace on the road. Just depends on the flavour your want really: want to feel like a racer = supersport, fast on the road but your ass and back don’t hurt = naked, like designer beards/beers as well as vintage bikes that don’t break down = retro bike, am a inner hooligan and is actually the best commuter = supermoto, or if your like the outdoors but still like riding on the road to get there = adventure tourer.

Just because a handful of people had issues doesn't mean they're unreliable. It's anecdotal. Out of the thousands they've sold it's probably a very small percentage that have needed anything more than a software update.

MV Agusta is probably a reliable brand though, right?

Real talk, are
there better, more interesting bikes out there? Absolutely
!
Is there any motorcycle more suited to being the sole
mode of transportation for an enthusiast? I really do not think so.

Euro bikes have teething issues more often from new yeah. But modern Ducati’s from what my Ducati specia list tell me are fairly reliable, it’s just if something goes wrong parts take awhile and cost more money. Although Aprilia and MV Agusta easily are worse at the waiting for parts game haha.
I know I bought my Aprilia Shiver 750 with research that it’s dependable, but I’ll not look forward to waiting for parts if it’ll need it.
